UFC 248 has been an action-filled event, but it was the main event that failed to meet expectations!
Despite being one of the most hyped middleweights bouts and the toughest of tests for the newly-crowned champion, Israel Adesanya‘s first title defense against ‘Soldier of God’ Yoel Romero has failed to appeal to anyone in the MMA community, from fighters to media to even UFC president, Dana White, who blatantly said that “fight sucked”.
The fight itself was a chess match in which Adesanya managed to get the upper hand in the majority of the fight being very effective in keeping the distance with leg kicks and jabs. Romero’s fourth title fight saw him put in one of the most shameful performances for a title contender in UFC history. Romero has managed to land only 40 strikes in five rounds for the championship and had 0/3 takedown attempts. Israel was not impressive either, landing 48 strikes in total, but seemed like the superior fighter and a champion who knew what he had to do against a dangerous guy such as Romero. Adesanya won by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).
In the co-main event, Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk put one for the ages! In a fight many already deem as the greatest female fight in UFC history, the pair managed to combine for almost 400 total strikes in a five-round war, which led to both fighters being unable to do media tour afterwards. A fantastic night for the strawweight division and, most importantly, for the women’s MMA!
