UFC 244 has not disappointed! Dana White and the UFC have been known for putting up amazing cards in the ‘Greatest Arena in the World’ ever since the legalization of the sport in the State of New York happened.
UFC 244: Masvidal vs. Diaz carried with itself a list of unusual things for any MMA fan: a new $50,000 belt being introduced labeling the first champion (if that is even official or a one-time thing, we are still unsure) the baddest motherf**ker in a bout between fan-favorites Jorge Masvidal, who was coming of an impressive 2 KO streak beating Darren Till and Ben Askren, against Nate Diaz, who only fought once after the loss to Conor McGregor on UFC 202 in 2016. The belt was presented by none other than former WWE superstar and current actor, entrepreneur and producer Dwayne Johnson, also known as ‘The Rock’.
In the main event of the evening, ‘Street Jesus’ has once again proved why he is the next in line for a shot at the welterweight throne. Wins over Till and Askren may have catapulted Masvidal to stardom, but pure domination of MMA’s favorite bad-ass for three rounds has proved he must be next in line. Cool, calm and calculated, just the way you want your champion to be! Nonetheless, fan expectations might have been diminished because of a doctor’s stoppage of the match due to severe bleeding and deep cuts which were inflicted to Nate, proving once again that MMA has truly evolved in the past 20 years. Whether the rematch will be held or not, we have to agree this was one of the most expected fights of the year and did not disappoint!
In the co-main event of the evening, Liverpool’s Darren Till has fulfilled fans’ wishes and decided to move up against none other than the most recent middleweight contender who went 5 rounds against Israel Adesanya, Kelvin Gastelum and won! Weight cutting horrors seem to have done the trick by forcing him into his natural fighting weight class and we have to admit that Darren looked like a contender!
In other fights of the UFC 244, Corey Anderson and Kevin Lee were faced with the task of fighting some of the most hyped prospects in their respective weight-classes, Johnny Walker and Gregor Gillespie, and both came out on top in bonus-clinching performances via knockouts! Stephen Thompson was better than Vincent Luque in a unanimous deciosion call, whilst Derrick Lewis outperformed Blagoy Ivanov.
