FIBA World Cup: 5 favorites for winning it all

FIBA World Cup is approaching quickly. The tournament starts on 31th of August, and teams don’t have much time left for preparation. Here are our top 5 favorites that will fight for medals and the podium.

5. Spain – Currently ranked 2nd on FIBA World rankings and 4th on FIBA Power rankings, Spain deservedly belong in the group of favorites to win the Cup. They released the preliminary squad of 16 players, led by NBA champion Marc Gasol, and also few other NBA players: Ricky Rubio and Hernangomez brothers. The list also includes Euroleague stars Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull and many more. The main problem for this squad will be the lacking of young power, as their main core is getting much older and it is a question if they can carry this team to the very end.

4. France – While keeping in mind that they are 5th on FIBA Power rankings, they have a team that is capable of beating any other team. Their squad truly is star-studded , as it has Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, Nando De Colo and others. On the last world cup, they have beaten very strong Spain, and ended up getting bronze medal after a match versus Lithuania.

3. Greece – Its been only 13 years since Greece pulled of a great upset and won a silver medal at World Cup, after beating great USA squad, but losing to Argentina in the final. Now, Antetokounmpo led squad is looking forward to repeating that success, as the 2019 NBA MVP looks more than hungry to win while playing for national team. He will also have great help in his brother Thanasis, and also Euroleague stars Calathes, Sloukas, Bourousis and others.

2. Serbia – Squad full of stars, but struck with injuries. Milos Teodosić and Dragan Milosavljević are already removed from the team as they both suffered bad injuries that will keep them on sidelines for long enough so they can’t play in China. NBA Superstar Nikola Jokić decided to play for his national team for the first time since 2016, when Serbia won Olympics silver. Serbia is also current runner up in all three major cups: World Cup, Olympics and Eurobasket.

1.USA– Oh, twenty of their best superstars decided not to play for the National team in order to focus for an upcoming season? Well, they still have the best team on paper, lead by multiple all star and All-NBA member Kemba Walker, and also followed by one of the best shooters in the game, Khris Middleton. They are being coached by arguably the best coach ever, Gregg Popovich. USA squad should never be underestimated, as they were and will be the favorites to win every cup for a long time.
